World Breastfeeding Week kicks off

World Breastfeeding Week…. Day 1

World Breastfeeding Week kicks off today and lasts until August 7.

Held by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action every year since 1991, the week is intended to be a celebration and awareness campaign that brings attention to the issue of breastfeeding to communities all over the world.

The U.S. Surgeon General released a statement today in honor of the week:

“The decision to breastfeed is a personal one, and a mother should not be made to feel guilty if she cannot or chooses not to breastfeed. But given the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of mothers and children, we need to do what we can to help mothers who want to breastfeed to do so successfully.

Earlier this year, I released the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding which outlines steps that can be taken to remove some of the obstacles faced by women who want to breastfeed their babies.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also released new guidelines today under the Affordable Care Act that prohibit insurance companies from charging co-pays or co-insurance for womens prevention health services, inclduing breastfeeding support.
