A partnership between several agencies, including the Healthy Start Coalition, provided healthy food to more than 20,000 pregnant women and mothers from November 2009 to June 2011. Second Harvest North Florida and Shands Jacksonville partnered with the Coalition to implement the project with funding from the Wal-Mart Foundation.
Pregnant women received 10-lb bags of healthy foods when they came in for their obstetric appointments at Shands Jacksonville. Food preparation and healthy eating information were included with the bags, and several food demonstrations were held during the 18-month project.
Eating healthy during pregnancy is important to the health of both mother and baby. It promotes healthy growth and development and can lower the risk of gestational diabetes.
More information on the initiative is featured in Second Harvest’s 2011 Annual Report.
